A Great Feeling!

What a great feeling to have the new studio organized and up & running! After several years in-the-making, it is in full swing! More wool for hooking, Valdani Threads for wool applique and punch needle, patterns, frames, hooks, etc. Needlework designers patterns: Judith Plays Hooky, Primitive Spirit, Fiddlehead Finery, and more to come!

Is it a process and a journey building a studio? It evolves over time…handmade greeting cards and gift certificate envelopes, bowl fillers, etc. We are a working studio with regular hours:

  • Thursdays: 10 am – 4 pm Open hooking, shop, no instruction, bring your hooking and share the fun with others!
  • Fridays: 10 am – 4 pm Visit and find that perfect pattern and wool to go with it, for all your projects!
  • Saturdays: 10 am – 4 pm Bring your needlework of any kind and enjoy the studio and friendships!

Snuggle up in the woods, but close to town! Watch for the Fiddlehead Finery signs!

Bye for now!

The Waning of October

The days are getting shorter and my favorite time of the day is to wake very early, lighting little candles with a soft glow, to plan a new day. The quiet morning with the pitter-patter of rain on the cabin roof is so soothing this early morning. A great weekend ahead at the studio today with hooking friends who are working on their rugs. It’s always nice to be back on schedule and see what everyone is working on.

A nice group has confirmed their attendance for today. Fridays are open to classes for individuals or groups. Last Friday, Sara spent the morning for a class on color, as she designs a needlepoint project. Color is a wonderful inspiration in everything we do! An expected visitor is coming to spend time on Friday to further her knowledge in rug hooking and do some shopping! Saturday is “Needle Play Saturday” and a few old friends are stopping by to play!

The studio is open to everyone for your rug hooking needs! Wool: hand-dyed, special orders, and off-the-bolt! All are pre-washed and ready to hook! There are also all kinds of extras as well: frames, hooks, linen, wool applique, Valdani threads, DMC threads, rug hooking patterns, and gifts! Stop by and have a cup!

Be sure to let me know what classes you would like and we can arrange that! Braiding, Christmas In Wool, and Wool Applique classes are in the works!

It’s always beautiful here in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, so grab a girlfriend(s) and a tank of gas! Fiddlehead Finery is a happy place to come, create, and forget your cares for a few days!

See you soon!

Discovery1

Updating website information. After 2 years my house with studio was s0ld to another artist for which I am very happy. Easier to let go of something you dearly loved for someone else who will also love it and care for it and make it their own.

I am currently working on a new large classroom and store for more activity and availability for students and shoppers looking for a storefront here in the Northwoods to meet they rug hooking and needle work needs. Building should be begins sa soon as the weather melt some of our snow so the building can go up on the grounds of Frog Song Lodge.

Planning when I cannot sleep is a productive way to put all organization together.

Spring seems to be in the air a bit and that is always a booster, not to mention the sun!   we winked not appreciate these things if we did not experience the opposite. Life is so good if we look to the positive.

Now located in the Northwoods of of Wi. in a beautiful and tranquil setting we enjoy so much and et close to other activities.

We meet here at Frog Song Lodge for hooking every Thursday from 10:00 – 2:00 but we can extend the hrs if needed on that day. Bring your hooking and hook away or purchase a new pattern from my growing selection of Primitive and Folk Art selection as well as wools, wools ,wools, linen ( for a nominal fee I can surge it for you), embellishments for textured fibers and many samples for inspiration.

Working on updating this site often to keep you abreast. If for any reason you have problems or would rather talk on the phon, please call me at 715-477-2864.

Send photos of your current work or finished rugs. WE like inspiration and sharing your talents. Especially this pattern you have purchased from Fiddlehead Finery.

BLISS

The perfect spring day!!

A beautiful day here in Norwood, with the temp at at 73, clear skies, the gentlest breeze and all is at peace. The studio is all in order and several rugs were finished this week. Clothes on the line and the laundry finished.

I love having everything  caught up, at least what is important. Yards of new wool dyed in bright and beautiful colors for the shelves, flowers all planted to add more color to the beds.  Taking a coffee break in the warm sun and being thankful for doing what I love is really bliss.

A dye class with happy dyers, new projects, new visitors to the studio are all inspirations for for more bliss days and new hooking and other finery projects.

While in Wisconsin three weeks ago, my part time residence, I was surprised by a familiar  face about 17 miles from home. It took about 2 sentences to figure out that we both attend the Searsport Hook-in and Manistee workshop. I am so delighted for that moment as now I have a group to hook with in Land o Lakes! See you in a few days Kathie and looking forward to meeting some of the others!

Suit case packed and ready to head out on Sunday with Joanne, Marlene and Kathie for a week of study and fun, fun, fun! I was very fortunate to be able to get into Wanda Kerr’s class. She is the dye Guhru that writes for Rug Hooking magazine.

More posts on all of the fun we are looking forward to, later!

To add to a day of bliss  beautiful flowers in bloom that topped it off!

Be back soon!

William Morris

f055a0a2-ca27-4425-b8e5-217b32c2cc4b  Let me introduce you to an “old friend” that Kitty reminded me of. You know the feeling of seeing an old friend that you have not seen in a while? Well I felt the same way with this William Morris rug that has been on the back burner for some time.

As I gazed at the 8 values of each color in this rug, the memory of my “wool painting” came to the fore front and my hand was once again eager to continue this rendition of a long ago artist, but not forgotten one. To capture his work in color and fiber is a wonderful lesson for the art that I love.

I give tribute to Carolyn Clemens who sadly is not with us, but her memory is worked into this rug. By phone and mail, we executed my color plan for this rug. Carolyn was an expert in dying, and indeed she did so for me on this project. Thank you dear friend!

In conjunction with Gaylord Area Council of the Arts  “One Hundred Days Of Art”, I chose to work on fiber, color, value and inspiration and working on my William Morris rug again.

Along with needle in hand, I started a daily journal again of inspiration and meditation that stirs my creative process. I am glad I challenged myself for this one hundred days of art

Welcome to the studio of creativity including, artists who inspire, various needles, a wide variety of fibers, textures and colors!

William Morris was a leader in the Arts and Crafts movement during the middle 18oo’s. He was a break through  from the Victorian period and very popular today. He was a textile artist as well as many other areas of the Arts.  A special thank you to William also!

Happy creating everyone. Until the next posting, from DeEtta at the studio of Fiddlehead Finery!

A TISKET A TASKET, WHAT IS IN THE BASKET

WELCOME MAY!

GO, GO, GO,  ……….CLEAN, ORGANIZE,POLISH,RAKE, THROW,ORGANIZE,HOOK,DYE,QUILT,KNIT,BAKE,FARM ……AND SO IT GOES. LIFE IS GOOD!

WHAT A WONDERFUL LIFE OF CREATIVITY AND CONSTANT LEARNING. I AM STILL WORKING ON “OLD FRIENDS”  BUT GETTING SOME OF THEM FINISHED. I HAVE MY APPLIQUE QUILT READY FOR JUDY TO QUILT.

GARRY AND I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO  TRY OUR HAND AT FARMING, AND LOVE IT DID WE. WE CARED FOR 3 SHEEP, 3 LAMBS AND TINKERBELLE THE GOAT. TINKERBELLE NEEDED TO BE MILKED TWICE A DAY , FILL THE CRIB WITH HAY, FEED THE CHICKENS ETC. WHEN DUTY CALLS YOU WILL BE THERE. IT WAS A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE AND EVEN THE SMALLEST OF LIFE WAS SO AUDIBLE AND VISIBLE. A MOUSE WOULD SCAMPER UNDER FOOT AND SQUEEK WAITING FOR A PIECE OF GRAIN TO FALL. TINKERBELLE KNEW IT WELL AND WAS JUST AS WELCOME. THE BABY LAMBS WOULD STAND UP AGAINST YOUR BACK AS THE MILKING PROCESS WAS TAKING PLACE AND ENJOYED NIBBLING ON MY BOOT STRINGS.

EACH DAY WE MILKED ABOUT 2 1/2 QUARTS OF MILK (SO GOOD WHEN IT IS WARM) SO WE MADE CHEESE. THE SWEETEST I HAVE EVER EATEN. WITH THE NEW HERBS IN MY BEDS, WE TOOK A VARIETY AND THE CHEESE LOGS WERE ROLLED GENTLY INTO THEM FOR A SWEET AND SAVORY SPRING TREAT.

EVEN THE COOL AND RAINY DAYS OF SPRING ARE WELCOME AS I CALL THEM PLAY DAYS IN THE STUDIO, TRYING NEW SWATCHES OF HAND DYED WOOL INTO NEW PROJECTS.

LAST WEEKS STUDENTS CAME WITH QUESTIONS WHICH WE TOOK APART AND FOUND THE ANSWERS. THANK YOU JOANNE FOR QUESTION ON BACKGROUNDS AND MOVEMENT. WE CONCLUDED THAT THE FOREMOST PROTRUDING AREA THAT LEADS THE WAY THROUGH THE WATER, MAKES A RIPPLE EFFECT THAT GIVES THE DIRECTION OF MOVEMENT. FILED AND WILL BE USED FOR FURTHER USE.

WE ALSO HAVE A CHALLENGE OF A TRADING CARD. I HAD VERY GOOD SUCCESS SEVERAL YEARS AGO WITH THIS PROJECT. CARDS CAME FROM B.C. , NOVA SCOTIA, AUSTRALIA AND THE US. WE WILL SEE WHAT SURFACES THIS TIME. IF ANY ONE OUT THERE WOULD LIKE TO JOIN, JUST LET US KNOW HERE !
